JON OLIVA'S PAIN AT THE RITZ YBOR ON SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 2012

JON OLIVA'S PAIN, the Florida-based band led by SAVATAGE mastermind Jon Oliva, will play SAVATAGE's classic 1987 album, "Hall Of The Mountain King", in its entirety at The RITZ Ybor in Tampa FL on Saturday, June 16, 2012. JON OLIVA'S PAIN is also expected to play several songs from DOCTOR BUTCHER, the early 1990s project created by Oliva and guitarist Chris Caffery at a time when they were not active members of SAVATAGE.

This is the only US show to see this rare performance before the band heads to Europe for festival dates.

JON OLIVA'S PAIN lineup for the performances will consist of Jon Oliva (vocals and keyboards), Christopher Kinder (drums), Jerry Outlaw (guitar), Jason Jennings (bass) and a very special guest guitarist to be announced soon.

"Hall Of The Mountain King" was the first SAVATAGE album to be produced by Paul O'Neill and it showed the beginning of the band's progressive tendencies as they explored new forms of expression in their music. Many fans consider this LP a turning point in SAVATAGE's musical identity.

Opening will be a fantastic Queensryche Tribute Band called Jet City with some very special guests sitting in. Pre-show and after party with “Retribution” featuring Damond Jiniya former lead vocalist of Savatage. Doors open at 7:30pm with Show at 9pm.

On Thursday, December 1, 2011, The RITZ Ybor will present their 3rd Annual Miracle on 7th Avenue holiday celebration from 6pm and 9pm.

Miracle on 7th Avenue is a special event open to the general public of all ages celebrating the holiday season and the hospitality of Ybor City. Guests of the event will be treated to complimentary catering courtesy of Gaspar’s Grotto, specialty holiday cocktails and beverages, live entertainment courtesy of The Ken Apperson Band, dance collective Tapped In, singers Anye Cole and Jeremy Gloff with emcees Carla Vaughan and Steve Blanchard. A photo station with Santa courtesy of Booray Perry Photography, along with various holiday-themed craft vendors will be featured at Miracle on 7th Avenue. Winners of the 3rd Annual tree decorating contest involving 10 local Ybor City businesses will be announced at the event.

Doors for Miracle on 7th Avenue at The RITZ Ybor open at 6pm and the event will last until 9pm. The event is free to attend, but there will be an optional donation taken at the door. All donations at the door and proceeds from bar, beverage and photo sales will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Fund (PCF).

The Pediatric Cancer Fund (PCF) exists to raise money to fund pediatric cancer research. Their focus is to fund research and find less toxic, more targeted treatment which will lead to the elimination of pediatric cancer.

Square One’s 4th Annual Fall Creative Event called COSMOPOLITAN expands to two nights, taking place with an Art Walk Preview on Friday, November 18, 2011 and continuing with the main event on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

On Friday, November 18, 2011 from 7pm to 11pm, Square One will host an Art Walk preview at The RITZ Ybor and multiple Ybor City-based venues including The Bricks, Ybor Art Colony, The Stone Soup Company, Collage Ybor, Singing Stone, Tre Amici @ The Bunker, Hoffman Porgues Gallery and Sunday’s Fine Dining. More than 75 local artists will be on display at The RITZ Ybor alone, while other participating venues will debut new art shows and exhibits.

On Saturday, November 19, 2011, Square One will present their 4rd Annual Fall 2011 and 8th Square One Creative Event called COSMOPOLITAN. The RITZ Ybor will once again be home to the art, music, dance and fashion extravaganza that will feature 75 local artists along with live performances from over 40 musicians, dancers, models and performers. COSMOPOLITAN will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Fund (PCF). More than 2,500 attendees are expected at both nights of COSMOPOLITAN.

Each Square One Creative Event revolves around a selected theme. Artists and performers are encouraged to present their work based on the chosen theme which involves specific concepts, colors and subject matter. Audiences are allowed to participate at the event by incorporating the event theme elements into their wardrobe and attire.

The theme of COSMOPOLITAN revolves around a traveling, around-the-world, international theme. Audiences will be encouraged to incorporate the theme colors into their attire by wearing the colors red, white and blue at the event.

COSMOPOLITAN, a Square One Creative Event, is open to the general public of all ages.

The RITZ Ybor with Creative Loafing present their 2nd annual celebration of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a midnight screening and movie party for the 1975 cult-classic film on Friday, October 21, 2011.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is often referred to as the ultimate cult-classic film and holds the records for the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The film is a musical parody of B-movies, science fiction and horror films of the late 1940’s through the early 1970’s.

Doors for the event at The RITZ Ybor will open at 10pm. There will be a costume contest and performances by local musicians Jeremy Gloff with Anye Cole, drag personality MACAViTi and a burlesque dance performance by Hellcats Burlesque. A screening of the movie will take place at midnight with the Cheap Little Punks, Tampa’s live cast. An after party with the cast and DJ Sirius will immediately follow the screening.

PANIC! AT THE DISCO COMING TO THE RITZ YBOR ON OCTOBER 23, 2011

Fun fact: Panic! At The Disco played one of the last sets at the old Masquerade in Ybor City. It happened on February 19, 2006, alongside Hellogoodbye, The Academy Is... and others. Less than two weeks later, the club was closed for good.

That is, until late 2008, when the venue at 1503 7th Avenue reopened as The RITZ Ybor, a shiny new concert hall that has hosted shows by everyone from Lady Gaga to Ben Folds to The Smashing Pumpkins.

Just as The RITZ Ybor is a lot different from the old Masquerade, Panic! At The Disco in 2011 is a lot different from Panic! At The Disco in 2006. They've lost half of their original members, for one thing.

But Panic! At The Disco isn't giving up. You may have spotted Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith at this year's 97X Backyard Barbecue in St. Pete. And they're returning to Tampa, with a gig on October 23 at -- you guessed it -- The RITZ Ybor. (See how it all comes full circle?)

Ettison came a very close second with their rendition of "Suspicious Minds," while Last Minute Stars ("Devil In Disguise"), Spark Notes ("Jailhouse Rock") and Ars Nova ("A Little Less Conversation") gave everyone a run for their money. In the end, it was On Carlton Row who ultimately won the night with their take on The King's "Suspicious Minds."

The RITZ Ybor was a packed house last night with not one empty seat in the venue. The audience enthusiastically cheered on Stalling Dawn who did a rocking version of Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," the Diamond Dolls who performed a dark, electro-synth version of "Piece of Me" and Curbside Goodbye who did a metal rendition of Brit's "Toxic." In the end, it was both The James-Lange Theory with their medley of "Toxic" and "Baby One More Time" and Next Of Kin with their bluesy, funk version of "Oops! I Did It Again" who stumped the judges with their hundreds of cheering fans, who in the end ultimately declared a tie and a victory for both bands.

I’m trying to think of a clever way to start this article, but nothing’s coming out.

But that’s okay, because this story is about Natasha Bedingfield. And for the British pop star, writer’s block is a recurring theme.

Just sift through her catalog, from her huge hits These Words (“Waste bin full of paper; clever rhymes, see you later...”) and Unwritten (“The pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned...”), to unreleased tracks like D.I.Y. (“Got a dozen ideas and a hundred more, like a pile of shoes that have never been worn...”). For a pop singer-songwriter, Bedingfield sure sings a lot about not writing pop songs.

But the occasional bout of writer’s block hasn’t hindered Bedingfield. Since debuting in America, she’s sold more than 10 million albums and singles worldwide, and her songs have soundtracked countless movies and TV shows. She’s currently performing a stripped-down tour at clubs across the U.S. in support of her latest disc, Strip Me.

Before she hits The RITZ Ybor on Thursday (tickets are $20; click here), Bedingfield called from a tour stop in Dallas to talk writer’s block, shoe shopping and the true meaning of the phrase “pocketful of sunshine.”

Did you know there’s a Facebook page called “Justin Bieber sounds like Natasha Bedingfield”?

It’s got 170 fans. Do you think there’s some validity to it?

That’s awesome! (laughs) I mean, he kind of sounds more like my brother, because Daniel also has some hits, right? And for a man, he has higher notes, higher tones than a lot of men. Justin sounds a bit like him. But that’s cool! I’m going to check that page out. (sings) Baby, baby ...

I think These Words is one of the most clever pop songs in recent years. Which is interesting because it’s all about writer’s block. Since you’re a co-writer of that song, can you talk about how it was created?

Every writer has a song or two about writer’s block, because it really is one of those things that every creative person faces at some point. It can just be overthinking something, or it can be just trying to be too clever. We were trying to figure out a really sophisticated way of saying “I love you,” because we didn’t want to use it; it can be over-cliched. And actually, when we came to it, we were like, “There is no other way of saying 'I love you’ than 'I love you.’” It just became this simple thing, and a rediscovery of what that means. It’s funny — some of the best love songs are quite simple, but they somehow find a way to say it in a way that no one has.

Cleverness isn’t something that seems to be in vogue in pop music these days.

It’s strange. Everyone’s dumbing it down a bit, aren’t they?

What’s wrong with writing a smart song?

I don’t know. I think for some people, it’s about having success and pleasing people, as many as possible. Record companies even have hit predictors. They’ll test little bits of songs, and they want everything to be perfect. I think it takes a risk to compose a song, and write something that is personal, instead of sticking to a formula. Music, to me, has always been more than just formulas and numbers and figures. My favorite albums aren’t always the ones on that have been on radio.

Do you have tips on how to do your job when you just feel like you’re banging your head against a wall?

Yeah, it’s just the best outlet in the world: Music and art. Music is something I can throw myself in, and it feels so rewarding, and it’s my passion. I don’t need any other hobbies. I do a bit of painting as well, but mostly, music is the thing for me. I’s just this fascination with expressing something that you don’t know how to say, and then you’ve actually said it, and you couldn’t think of a better way of saying it. Even when a song is finished, there’s this feeling of completion that you won’t take anything out of it or add anything to it. That feels really cool.

What’s been your hardest song to write?

There’s been some songs that took a couple of years. The main thing for me is, I always want to be very honest in my music — choosing to be open, choosing to be vulnerable, even though the more you love someone, the more they can hurt you; the more you show someone of you, the more they can use it against you. That’s a lifestyle choice, and an artistic choice, for me. I think a lot of pop is about putting an artist on a pedestal, so that no one could ever feel like they could come close to being who you are. To me, it’s the opposite.

On your blog recently, you had this post about your love of interesting shoes. You snapped some photos of unique footwear you saw on the road. If people were coming to your show and wanted to show off their shoes, what would catch your eye?

Things that are loud and proud and stand out. There’s a line in one of my songs that says, “My feet need a holiday from this neverending race.” I like that focus on the feet. They get us so many different places, so they should be celebrated. I myself run around in stilettoes throughout my whole show.

Do you shop for shoes on the road?

I’ve been buying a lot of shoes online recently. There’s a lovely website called Net-a-Porter that has a lot of amazing clothes, and it’s really addictive and dangerous, because you just click a button, and you’re going to have all these amazing gifts coming to your house, from yourself, gift-wrapped in bubble wrap. It’s like Christmas!

As you know, your songs have appeared on a lot of soundtracks. Have you seen every movie or TV show in which one of your songs plays?

I mean, I haven’t watched every episode of The Hills, but I’ve seen a couple of them. But a lot of the movies, I’ve seen. I’ll go to the premiere sometimes. I went to Something Borrowed, I went to Morning Glory. Sometimes there have been songs that have turned up in movies that I didn’t even know about, and I’m just an innocent moviegoer. I have a publishing company, and sometimes they’ll approve things that maybe I didn’t read the e-mail about.

When that happens, do you slink down in your seat in the theater? Or do you stand up, like, 'Hey, that’s me!”

There was one time on an airplane, I think it was Flicka, and my song Wild Horses played at the end of it. And that was one of the rare times I stood up and walked down the plane, like, “That’s my song!”

What’s your favorite movie that one of your songs has been in?

My favorite is Pocketful of Sunshine, in a couple of movies. Easy A is really funny, because it makes fun of how pop songs are kind of annoying, then they creep up on you and become part of the fabric of your life — they become your song. So that one’s my favorite. There’s another one with, what’s her name, Heigl. The Ugly Truth. She’s got vibrating underwear on, and she starts getting an orgasm while she’s at the table, because someone’s pressed the button on the vibrating underwear, and suddenly Pocketful of Sunshine comes on. That’s funny, because that’s a different meaning of the term “pocketful of sunshine.”

Bedingfield brings her 'everyone is special' message to The RITZ Ybor on Thursday

Natasha Bedingfield wants you to feel special.

"I do feel like we're all incredibly special, and we don't understand how unique and powerful we are," she said during a telephone call from Dallas last week.

The British pop artist thought of singing such sentiments when crafting her latest album "Strip Me," much of which she will perform Thursday at The RITZ Ybor on her Less Is More tour.

"I actually wrote this whole album with the live show in mind," she said. "The more honest I am, the more open, it seems to have more response from people."

The 29-year-old singer/songwriter's lyrics resound with optimistic introspection -- inspirational sentiments ripe for dismissal as the stuff of pop and pop stars' circumstance. "Pocketful of Sunshine," Bedingfield's 2008 hit single, could well be a nickname for an oeuvre replete with cheek-burning cheer.

Earnestness is an easy target, but sans melody, Bedingfield still sings the same tune.

"Everyone is special," she said, but we're all snowflakes in the same drift.

"I think we're all human, and we all go through the same stuff. Whatever position you are in life, you still have issues. You still have brokenness in your life."

Easy-bake, sing-along lyrics about being true to yourself aside, an empowering sentiment stands.

"It's kind of daring someone," she said of the philosophy behind her album. "'If you strip me.' It's kind of aggressive. You can knock me down. You can squash me. You can strip me away, the stuff that you see on the outside, because that's not who I am."

Bedingfield's roots-pop opener, Kate Voegele, 24, lauds her headliner's themes.

"That's what I love about Natasha, is that her music isn't just about [romantic] relationships," she said from Texas. "She's got some great songs that focus on the everyday aspect of life … the human experience."

Voegele, too, aspires to inspire, though her newest record, "Gravity Happens," hits its share of love notes.

"I definitely try to write about a variety of things, but what I want more than anything is ... if I can make somebody feel better."

The Kanvas Showcasing the Best of Tampa’s Urban Arts:

Once again, VYB is bringing the area’s best hip hop crews and dance choreographers together on the main stage at The RITZ Ybor. This time, the showcase will include crews from all over Florida.

The stage is our canvas,” says DeMario Henry, VYB’s founder, “it’s where we leave our mark.” The Kanvas was created as a platform for young professionals to express themselves and for an audience to experience and embrace dance culture. What started as a small showcase in a studio setting has grown to an evening length event attracting talent from all over Florida.With so much response from local and regional choreographers and dance crews, VYB has decided to implement an invite only selection process. Below is the details to send your videos to become selected.

All Dance Pieces must be no longer than 5min.

There will be an on-stage rehearsal the week of the show for you to do run through your piece with lighting, sound, and whatever else you feel you need to do an amazing show. Your allotted time will be 15min. max. Please respect this time constraint so that we can get everyone a chance to be onstage.

We are encouraging you to bring video cameras and cameras this year. Videotaping is allowed.

Synthpop pioneers Erasure are back with Tomorrow’s World, the band’s first album in more than four years. The new album is out Fall 2011 and is produced by one of the UK dance scene’s most exciting new talents, Frankmusik, whose remixing credits include Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding, and Far East Movement and whose solo album Complete Me debuted at number 13 in the UK Albums Chart. Tomorrow’s World was mixed by Rob Orton.

After Erasure’s triumphant return to the stage for Short Circuit presents Mute at the Roundhouse, London, a one-off performance which saw Vince Clarke perform with very special guests Alison Moyet and Feargal Sharkey, plus a performance at 2011’s Ultra Music festival, Erasure is bringing the new album to the U.S. for their first tour in five years! The 25-date US tour begins August 31st in Tampa at The RITZ Ybor, continues through September, and finishes in Seattle on October 6th. Tickets go on sale Friday June 24th at Ticketmaster, as well as TicketFly. Ticket presales, which will offer a chance to preorder the new album Tomorrow’s World, will start on Wednesday June 22nd.

Tomorrow’s World was written in New York, London, and at Vince Clarke’s cabin studio in Maine following a short break, which found Andy Bell recording and releasing his second solo album Non Stop, and Vince Clarke reuniting with former Yazoo partner Alison Moyet for a recent tour. It was recorded in Maine, London and Los Angeles between January and June 2011, with Vince using his vintage collection of analog synths for the final touch. The end result is a collection of electronic songs that sound totally contemporary and classic at the same time. All songs are written by Bell and Clarke.

From Lady Gaga to La Roux, the futurist, electronic sound Erasure championed is more relevant today than ever, and once again re-charging the global music scene. The award-winning duo of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell unleashed on the nation a succession of both influential and chart-topping pop anthems. REPO! The Genetic Opera, which is a horror-rock opera movie musical, immediately gained a cult film following upon its theatrical release in 2008. Described as The Rocky Horror Picture Show meets Blade Runner, the film takes place when a worldwide epidemic of organ failure forces a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. Failure to maintain proper payment on financed-organs results in forceful repossession of the organs by the Repo man.

REPO! The Genetic Opera stars Anthony Head, Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman, Alexas Vega and Paris Hilton and was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman.

La Roux concert moved from Czar to the Ritz Ybor

We saw this happen with another hot young electronic pop act, when Owl City moved from the State Theatre to The RITZ Ybor in February. And that show still sold out.

So maybe it's a sign of this show's impending popularity that it's been moved to The RITZ as well.

The too-cool-for-Tampa La Roux concert scheduled for Aug. 3 at Czar has been moved to The RITZ Ybor. That's a sizeable bump in capacity, so we're getting the sense demand for this show has been, and will continue to be, strong.

On the one hand, it's kind of a shame Ybor's most hipster-heavy dance club won't get to host this show, as it would be a great fit for the Pulp the Party crowd, and we were looking forward to a night where all the patrons were wearing chunky white sunglasses inside a dark nightclub. On the other, The RITZ Ybor is a boffo venue, so it's still gonna be a fun show.

Tickets are still $16-$18.

Canadians bring new wave pop to Ybor

Television producers whose shows have story lines involving young bands, please call Tokyo Police Club. They want to work with you.

The Canadian quartet has experience, too. It appeared in an episode of "Desperate Housewives," thanks to a friend who works on the show.

In the episode, the husbands of the main characters form a band. The story called for them "to be shamed by some younger, energetic, hip band," said TPC keyboardist Graham Wright.

The band's friend talked them up constantly, Wright said, so the producers gave TPC a call. "We got the call and flew to L.A.," Wright said by telephone while traveling to a tour stop in Baltimore.

"It was ridiculous," Wright said with a laugh. "We were treated like actors, sort of like we were the talent. We had stand-ins. For two hours someone would stand behind my keyboards while they got the lighting right while I ate brownies at catering.

"We want to do more of that. Please call us."

Wright and his band mates -- drummer Greg Alsop, guitarist Josh Hook and bassist-vocalist David Monks -- likely will be a bit more high-profile this year, TV appearances or not. Their second full-length album, "Champ," was released Tuesday. It was produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith).

"He's a fantastic producer. I can see why he's had so much success," Wright said. "He's a nice guy, although he has a very dry sense of humor that can be mistaken for him hating you." The band brought Schnapf in to help shape and focus their songs.

"Rob was definitely hands-on because we asked him to be," Wright said. "For this record we wanted input, a fresh pair of ears. Do we need a second chorus instead of a bridge? Should we swap this around? He has a wealth of experience at bringing the song out in a way people can understand."

The band's new wave-influenced pop was first formulated in a basement and then through near-constant touring.

"When we wrote (2006 debut EP) 'A Lesson in Crime,' we were hanging out in the basement with no intention of making a record. It was free, anything went. No rules," Wright said.

The EP gained a buzz on the Internet, which brought the band several festival dates and an opening stint for Weezer. Somewhere in the midst of it all, the band wrote and recorded its full-length debut, 2008's "Elephant Shell."

"We were in a weird place of trying to capitalize on the EP but having to make a new record," Wright said. "We were trying to write songs between tours. It was just insanely rushed. I barely remember writing those songs."

The band took much of 2009 off to write and work on "Champ."

"We said, 'We'll be in a room in Toronto. We'll let you know when we're ready,'" Wright said.

You could say the The RITZ Ybor got lucky when it booked Lady Gaga right before Poker Face blew up. You could say they got lucky due to the implosion of its biggest rival for concerts, Jannus Landing.

But you can’t say The RITZ has squandered its opportunity to dominate the local concert scene. Starting with concerts last fall by Underoath and Of Montreal, and continuing as it hosted the Maxim Party during this year’s Super Bowl, The Ritz has made believers out of Tampa music fans.

Packed shows included Ben Folds, Brand New, Tiesto, the Psychedelic Furs,Third Eye Blind, Taking Back Sunday, Gwar, Pitbull, the Hold Steady and, um, Air Supply, plus many more. Larger than St. Petersburg’s State Theatre, it’s clearly become the most attractive mid-major concert venue in Tampa Bay, and it sits in the heart of Tampa’s entertainment district.

And with shows by Owl City, Gov’t Mule and (Dweezil) Zappa Plays Zappa planned for 2010, The RITZ is showing no signs of slowing down.

Two weeks ago, We the Kings singer Travis Clark awoke early in the morning, stumbled into the kitchen half-awake, poured himself a glass of orange juice and stuck his iPhone in the refrigerator. It was the first time he'd done something that strange since childhood, when, for reasons he still doesn't understand, he used to hide the family phone in the mailbox at his Bradenton home.

We know all this because Clark shared it on his blog, whoistravis clark.com, an oddly humanizing diary that has turned the idea of a celebrity's online journal on its head. Embarrassing childhood photos? A tale about how he got food poisoning from a hot dog, requiring a shot in the butt (including the requisite photo)? It's all fair game to Clark.

His Bradenton pop-punk band has become a big deal in the past two years, spending time on two Warped Tours, playing on TV and at shows around the world (including a 2008 gig at Tropicana Field), and charting with singles like Check Yes Juliet and Skyway Avenue. Their second album, Smile, Kid, is due Dec. 8, and they're performing with All Time Low on Monday at The RITZ Ybor in Tampa.

As his band prepares for their (almost) hometown gig, Clark called from a stop in Rhode Island to discuss his bloggy lifestyle.

You have to be one of the most oversharing rock stars on the Internet.

It actually came from the fans. They wanted me to start a blog where I could rant and rave about ridiculous things. I wanted to let people into my life — maybe it would open their eyes to what the songs are about, or why I write the songs that I do.

I loved the post where you answered 194 questions about yourself, from your first pet to your mom's breast cancer to the frequency of your haircuts. What won't you reveal about yourself online?

Well, I don't want to tell people where I live. I do have a personal life, and I do have stuff that I keep to myself. But for the people that want to know more about me, I want to have this site. It's me posting, so it's the truth, from my mouth. I guess that's better than seeing it on TMZ.com or Perez Hilton.

You post a lot about Chipotle, I've noticed.

Oh, I love Chipotle. It's unanimously the band's favorite quick, in-and-out restaurant. When you're constantly touring, you've got to find the place that's consistent. We've found that Chipotle has the most consistent guacamole.

Are you getting recognized more in Bradenton these days?

Yeah, but it's cool, because Bradenton is such a small town that everybody knows everybody. Everyone's super-respectful. I'm always at the beach, I eat at the same places every single day, and people say hi, and that's it. I talk to them just like they were normal friends. Restaurants never let us pay for food, which is pretty awesome. The times that we needed restaurants to comp our food were there years ago; now that we actually can pay for our own meals, they give it to us for free. It's a weird situation, but super-flattering.

You're only in town for a day or two. Are you going to have any time to go back to Bradenton?

I will be home for the day. I'm closing on my first house. I will officially be a first-time homeowner. I'm hoping I can take the rest of the tour to the house to break it in.
