RISING DOWN, Winner of The RITZ Ybor's 3rd Annual Ultimate Bands Series!

The RITZ Ybor's 3rd Annual Ultimate Bands Series concluded this past Saturday, August 18, 2012 where RISING DOWN won the series and took home the Grand Prize valued at $5,000.00:
  • the opportunity to open for an upcoming national touring act at The RITZ Ybor
  • a paid peformance at Invincible Summer, Square One's ART + FASHION + MUSIC + DANCE event at The RITZ Ybor on Saturday, November 17, 2012
  • a paid performance at Miracle on 7th Avenue at The RITZ Ybor on Wednesday, November 28, 2012
  • a paid performance at a Royal Room Pre-Party at The RITZ Ybor
  • a paid performance at The Rooftop Eve, Hyde Park Village's 3rd Annual New Year's Eve Party on Monday, December 31, 2012
  • a paid performance at a signature Hyde Park Village event in 2013
  • $500.00 cash, $100.00 Radiant gas cards, Busch Gardens passes, featured ads in Creative Loafing, tbt and on The RITZ Ybor homepage, plus much more!
It was a very tight race between all of the bands which also included The Northwest (Runner-up), Khora and Jack Jasper.  This year's Juding Panel (Jocelyn Brenner of Hyde Park Village, Joran Oppelt of Creative Loafing, Carole Liparoto of tbt and Jesse Kage of 98 Rock's The Kage Kult show) commented that there was only a slight 1-2 point difference in their scores, but Rising Down's unique cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Spirit of the Night" helped propel them to one of the Judges top spots.  With their massive sales of 300 tickets sold to their fans, Rising Down easily won the Audience Applause round which ultimately decided the winner.

A THANK YOU to this year's Juding Panel: Jocelyn, Joran, Carole & Jesse, our lovely emcee Melissa Carroll, our Finalist Bands: The Northwest, Khora and Jack Jasper, as well as our other participating bands: Danny Freeman, Dropin Pickup, Fight Another Day, Marvlec, Perfect Flaw, Red Calling, sowFLo, Sunshine & Bullets, Sweet Oblique, WD HAN and VANE all for participating.

You can next catch both Rising Down and The Northwest performing at Square One's Invincible Summer ART + FASHION + MUSIC + DANCE extravaganza on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at The RITZ Ybor!  Also, look for Rising Down in this Thursday's Creative Loafing and this weekend's edition of tbt.

Ani Difranco @ The RITZ Ybor 10/16/2012

After 20 years in the music biz, self-described “Little Folksinger” Ani DiFranco is still technically little, although her influence on fellow musicians, activists, and indie-minded people the world over has been huge. She still proudly identifies as a folksinger, too, but her understanding of that term has always been far more expansive than a bin at the record store or a category on iTunes, with ample room for soul, funk, jazz, electronic music, spoken word, and a marching band or two. Over the course of more than 20 albums, including the live double-CD Living in Clip (1997) and the two-disc career retrospective Canon (2007), as well as her latest, ¿Which Side are You On? (2012), Ani has never stopped evolving, experimenting, testing the limits of what can be said and sung. Her lifelong tribe of co-conspirators includes everyone from Pete Seeger and the late Utah Phillips to a new generation of twentysomething singersongwriters who grew up with her songs and shows—and then there’s the motley crew of folks like Prince, Maceo Parker, Andrew Bird, Dr. John, Arto Lindsay, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck D, the Buffalo Philharmonic, Gillian Welch, Cyndi Lauper, and even Burmese activist and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, with whom she has crossed paths in a myriad of ways.

Born in Buffalo, New York in 1970, Ani spent part of her twenties in New York City, then returned to her hometown where she established first a business office and then a performance venue called Babeville as the twentieth century ground to a halt and the twenty-first one revved up. For much of the last decade she’s been based in New Orleans—but at her core she’s always seen herself as “a traveler,” covering pretty much the four corners of the earth by now, both solo and with her band. (There’s less corner-covering these days, now that she’s consciously slowing down a bit and raising a daughter with partner and co-producer Mike Napolitano, but she still gets around just fine, playing venues like Madison Square Garden for Pete Seeger’s ninetieth birthday bash and another star-studded lineup at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan for Wavy Gravy’s seventy-fifth.)  Early in her career, Ani made a choice that is now so obvious to so many people that it’s hard to remember it was once considered brazen: to say no to every record label deal that came her way, and yes to being her own boss. That decision has earned her plenty of attention over the years, but it has never been what brought sold-out crowds to her shows around the world, fans debating every nuance of her lyrics, and fellow performers clamoring to work with her. No, all that has more to do with another choice she made early in life: To use her voice and her guitar as honestly and unflinchingly as she could, writing and playing songs that came straight from her own experience, her boundless imagination, her sharp wit, and her ever-more-nuanced understanding of how the world works. She did it in noisy bars with nothing but a shaved head and a lone guitar in 1990, and she’s doing it with renewed intensity today.

Ani Difranco will perform at The RITZ Ybor on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE.

With over 80 years' experience collectively Simon Posford and Raja Ram are more than qualified for the exploration into the unclassifiable music frontiers they have ventured into; 'SHPONGLE' is a new world of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with the computer wizardry of Simon Posford's studio production.

Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) has long had a reputation as the, 'Hallucinogenius' a imitable pioneer in sound experimentation, from his seminal first album, 'Twisted' which reached No.28 in the French charts selling over 50,000 copies worldwide, up to his recent Millennium hit, 'Mi-Loony-Um' with its up-to-the minute modem melodies. His international fan base has flowered from country-wide to world-wide in the last ten years, since his humble beginnings at Youth's Butterfly Studios in Brixton, this year alone he has played over 16 sell out gigs around the world, each with a capacity of over 1500 people, in Australia, Israel, New York, Pittursburg, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Moscow, Geneva, Montreal, Tokyo to name just a few. In Tokyo he has received a lot of TV and press coverage for their ambient project, 'Shpongle' which has intrigued the Japanese audience with its international blend of traditional world music and modern musical mastery. Raja Ram, is the innovative sonic co-pilot producing alongside Simon and providing inspirational artwork for the album covers and the website as well as his unmistakable flute solo's in C Major. A founding member of the band Quintessence in the sixties Raja has many years of band experience in the music industry. Not only a band member but also the creator of TIP Records along with their infamous party sound and energy, he is not only a brilliant flautist but the inspirational man behind the 'Shpongle' concept.

Shpongle has been a working project since the release of the first album in 1998 filtered out into the underground in which Twisted Records is so renowned for its dance music, having sold 30,000 copies without any noticeable press coverage Simon and Raja are now ready to hit the world with their unique sound and have been on a mission to express themselves since finishing the album over the winter, Raja has been playing a series of 16 parties in Brazil as well as tours in Japan and Simon playing all across the globe including his recent appearance in Tokyo. Now finally the UK has a chance to catch up on this worldwide phenomena with the forthcoming release of their second album, 'Tales of the Inexpressible' with its further explorations into diverse sound production they are ready to unleash the multiversity that is 'SHPONGLE'.
